Ricaarch Tice werd afgekeurd voor het Amerikaanse leger (geperforeerd trommelvlies). Om toch tegen de nazis te kunnen vechten trok hij naar Canada en nam daar dienst in het Poolse leger. Hij leerde Pools en werd in maart 1944 bevorderd tot officier.
Met zijn manschappen verdedigde hij de zuidkant van Driel, bij de Baarskamp, tegen Duitse aanvallen. Op de 22ste wisten ze een Duitse aanval af te slaan. Tice kwam hierbij om het leven. Hij werd eerst begraven in Driel bij de katholieke kerk voordat alle Poolse graven in 1946 werden overgebracht naar Oosterbeek.
